During the school year, the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) Board of Education invites an outstanding student to represent their peers at the monthly Board meeting. In March, the Board entertained a special guest, only the second middle school student to serve as the student Board representative. Mr. Justin Caringal, the son of Sennen and Faergals Caringal, is an eighth grader at Barnwell Middle School. Barnwell principal Mr. Dave Eckhoff says, “It has been a pleasure and an honor getting to know this fine young man, and I look forward to his continued success.”
Justin is an outstanding student, and currently has a 4.14 grade point average. He is part of the Spectra gifted student program, and has been a member of National Junior Society throughout middle school. Justin has also earned a spot on the honor roll each quarter, all while participating in the most challenging coursework the school has to offer.
Eighth grade science teacher Gene LaVigne said, “What the grades do not tell you is what a great guy he is. Justin is always positive, always respectful, and always considerate of others. He has a good sense of humor and common sense beyond his years. Justin makes the entire class (including the teacher) better.”
Outside of the classroom, he has been a part of the award winning Barnwell Robotics program for three years. The team has won two First Lego League Project Awards, and placed second in the General Motors competition. He has also participated in the Truman State University Joseph Baldwin Academy for highly talented students, and was nominated for the Duke University Talent Identification Program.
Outside of school he enjoys playing music, both the guitar and piano, and after eight years of study he earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 2015, and is currently a part-time instructor at his school.
His other teachers say Justin is a leader in all that he does, striving to improve each and every day. He is kind and considerate of his peers and goes out of his way to help them be successful. He has a great attitude and comes to school each day with a smile and a desire to learn.
